Best Time to Visit South Africa

Last checked 15 October 2026

South Africa is a year-round destination, but the best time depends on what you want to do and where you're going. The country spans winter-rainfall and summer-rainfall regions, so one part is usually at its best whatever month you travel.

Safari season: May to September

The dry winter months are the classic safari season in Kruger, KwaZulu-Natal and the northern reserves. Vegetation thins out, animals gather at water and days are mild and sunny, although early mornings on open game drives are cold. Malaria risk in the north-east is also lowest in winter.

Summer: November to March

Summer brings green landscapes, baby animals and superb birding, with hot days and afternoon thunderstorms in the north and east. It's peak beach season on the KwaZulu-Natal coast and the best time for the Western Cape and Cape Town, which have dry, sunny summers.

Wildlife seasons to plan around

Humpback whales pass the KwaZulu-Natal coast from about June to November, and southern right whales visit the Western Cape coast, especially around Hermanus, from about July to November. Loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest on the northern KwaZulu-Natal beaches from November to January, with hatchlings from January to March.

School holidays and busy periods

December to mid-January is South Africa's busiest holiday season, along with Easter and the July school holidays. Coastal towns and popular parks fill up and prices rise, so book early for these periods, or travel in the shoulder months of April, May, September and October for quieter parks and good weather.
